What we are aiming for

The people this site is written for are often older, often reading on a phone, and often reading something they find stressful. Making the site work for someone using a screen reader, a keyboard, or a large font size is the same work as making it work for them. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA.

We have not had that conformance audited by anyone independent, so we do not claim it as a fact. Below is what has actually been done and checked.

What has been done

  • Every page can be used with a keyboard alone, and the focused item is always visibly outlined.
  • A “Skip to content” link is the first thing a keyboard or screen reader reaches on every page.
  • Headings run in order, so a screen reader can jump through a page by its structure.
  • Every form field has a real label, and errors are announced rather than shown only in colour.
  • Images carry alternative text; icons that are decoration are hidden from screen readers entirely.
  • Text and background colours are checked for contrast, including the white text on our dark bands.
  • The page reflows to a phone screen and to a large font size without anything being cut off.
  • Pages are checked with axe, an automated accessibility checker, before they ship. Automated checking finds perhaps half of what matters, which is why the next section exists.

What we know is not done

  • No independent audit, and no testing with real users of assistive technology.
  • The site does not yet honour the system setting that asks for reduced motion. There is very little movement on it, but the setting is not read.
  • Any page that later embeds something from another company — a booking calendar, for example — is only as accessible as that company made it, and we will say so on that page.

If something does not work for you

Tell us and we will fix it. This is a small company; the person who reads your message is the person who changes the site. Say what you were trying to do and what happened, and if you know it, what you were using to read the page.

Call or text +1-385-787-6279 or write to michael@yourrecoveryadvocate.com. We aim to reply within two business days.

If the website is in your way, it is not the only way to reach us: everything on it can be done on the phone, with a person.
